Old Greenwich, CT, Orthodontist Explains How to Brush & Floss When You Have Braces

smiling woman

You’ve visited your orthodontist in Old Greenwich, CT, and taken that exciting step toward getting a happy, healthy smile that you’ll love flashing at your friends and family. As wonderful as the final outcome of wearing braces can be, however, you will find yourself needing to make some minor adjustments to some of your daily activities while your treatment progresses. One important change you should make is to take a little extra time when you brush and floss your teeth.

While brushing and flossing is always important for maintaining healthy gums and teeth, the stakes get a little higher when braces are involved. Your new braces have numerous nooks and crannies where food particles and germs can get trapped. If you don’t take the time to clean your braces and teeth thoroughly, you could end up with stains on your teeth, bad breath, or – even worse – cavities or gum disease.

Don’t get too worried, though. With just a little extra care and attention, you can keep your braces and your teeth clean and healthy throughout your treatment. Here are a few tips from our top-rated Old Greenwich orthodontist about how to care for your teeth while in braces.

How To Brush & Floss With Braces, According To Our 5-Star-Rated Old Greenwich, CT, Orthodontist

Brushing With Braces

To brush your teeth and braces, hold your toothbrush at an angle and move it in a gentle, circular motion. Be careful not to brush too roughly, and use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Stay on each area for at least 10 circular strokes of the toothbrush. Make sure you get all areas of your teeth, too – the front, back, and top of each tooth!

Flossing With Braces

The easiest way to floss with braces is to get a threader. You can ask your Old Greenwich, CT, orthodontist for advice on where to buy one. Get a piece of floss that is approximately 16 inches long, and pull 4 to 5 inches of it through the threader. Pass the threader through or under your braces appliance. Then detach the threader from the floss and floss between your teeth as normal. Repeat these steps for each space between your teeth.

I strongly recommend OG Dental for those looking for a new dentist or looking to switch. The front desk ladies were very welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful with scheduling and finances. My hygienist, Leah, and Dr. Busch were both great at educating me in the procedures/treatment plan I need to have done and the reasons why. I hadn't been to the dentist in years and the quality of care and attention was excellent! This office is beautiful, modern and also family friendly!

Everyone is amazing and friendly! Dr. Busch is a normal down to earth guy. The front desk team is always on their game. Danielle is the best hygienist going. So happy I found this group.

I've been a patient of OGDA since 1988 and have been very pleased with the care I've gotten. The professionals and staff are all totally dedicated to the dental and overall health of their patients.

I have never been to a dental or medical office that was so welcoming and efficient my first visit went with ease. The receptionist knew who I was upon my entering the greeted me with the biggest smiles which was a great start. I then went on to meet the hygienist Kate who cleaned my teeth like never before she was very knowledgeable and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way, she then called the doctor in who was a really cool dude he spoke to me in dental language I can understand made sure before leaving I understood everything we discussed. I do need a few more visits, but I plan on now switching the rest of my family. Thank you Dr. Busch and Staff

It is rare to find a dentist who has excellent credentials, state of the art knowledge and equipment, and a responsive and caring staff. Dr. Busch and his support team accomplish this in an exemplary fashion. His care has been excellent in all ways. I would highly recommend his practice to anyone with dental issues.
